The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the RTMA and reports directly to the Board of Directors. This role is responsible for ensuring the financial health, operational excellence, and strategic direction of the RTMA and its affiliated entities: the Rochester Tooling & Machining Institute (RTMI), RTMA Services Corp., and the Committee to Promote Upstate NY Manufacturing (PAC). The Executive Director provides visionary leadership to advance the mission of supporting and strengthening the advanced manufacturing community in the nine-county Finger Lakes region.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Lead the development, execution, and evaluation of RTMA’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the needs of members and the broader manufacturing community.
  • Facilitate strategic planning sessions (approximately every five years) with the Board and staff, utilizing external facilitation as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership in creating and enhancing programs that deliver value to RTMA members.
  • Represent RTMA as a visible and respected leader in the community, maintaining strong partnerships with educators, workforce boards, and industry stakeholders.
Governance & Board Relations

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, ensuring transparent communication, timely reporting, and effective execution of Board policies.
  • Prepare and present the annual operating budget for Board approval at the February meeting.
  • Ensure compliance with RTMA by-laws and policies, including the scheduling and facilitation of monthly Board meetings (excluding July and August).
  • Promote active engagement and participation of Board members and membership in RTMA activities.
Financial Management & Compliance

  • Maintain the financial stability of RTMA and its affiliated organizations.
  • Oversee annual independent audits, tax filings, and compliance with all federal and state nonprofit regulations.
  • Ensure proper oversight of the PAC, including all required NYS filings.
  • Make recommendations regarding employee compensation and benefits in consultation with the Board President.
Membership & Community Engagement

  • Drive membership growth and retention strategies that preserve the RTMA’s integrity and influence.
  • Build strong partnerships with community organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions to advance workforce development and training opportunities.
  • Represent RTMA at statewide Manufacturing Alliance meetings and at annual Manufacturing Advocacy Day in Albany, advocating for member interests on legislative and regulatory issues.
Operations & Talent Management

  • Ensure the organization is appropriately staffed to deliver high-quality programs and services while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Foster a professional, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture that attracts and retains top talent.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for staff, with wage adjustments subject to Board President approval.
  • Oversee decisions related to employee benefits, ensuring competitive and cost-effective offerings.
  • Ensure effective communication with members, partners, and the public, consistent with RTMA’s mission and strategic goals.
Programs & Events

  • Oversee the planning and execution of monthly and periodic events that provide members with opportunities for innovation, strategic growth, political advocacy, and workforce development.
  • Ensure programs and services are continuously evaluated and improved to meet evolving member needs.
Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably within manufacturing, workforce development, or related industries.
  • Demonstrated financial management expertise, including budgeting, audits, and compliance with nonprofit regulations.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including business leaders, educators, and policymakers.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and public speaking skills.
  • Experience managing staff, cultivating talent, and fostering organizational culture.
  • Strategic thinker with a track record of developing and implementing programs that deliver measurable value to members.
  • Knowledge of government relations and advocacy processes at the state and federal level.
  • Proficiency in organizational technology and communication tools.
  • Willingness to obtain and maintain a New York State Broker’s License to support the Health Care Consortium.

Work Hours & Location

  • Standard hours: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.
  • Requires flexibility for evening meetings, events, and off-site conferences.
  • Primarily office-based; occasional remote work may be permitted for administrative tasks or virtual meetings.
